What is a roller fleece filter?

A roller fleece filter, also known as a fleece roller or roller mat filter, is a mechanical filtration system for aquariums that uses a continuous roll of fine fabric (fleece) to trap waste. Water passes through the fleece, with debris and particles being caught in the material. As the fleece becomes dirty, it's automatically or manually rolled up, exposing a clean section for continued filtration.

How does a roller fleece filter work?

Water enters the filter chamber where the fleece is located. As water passes through, waste particles are trapped in the fleece. When the water flow slows due to the fleece becoming clogged, a sensor (in automatic models) or manual operation triggers the advancement of the fleece roll, exposing a clean section. The dirty fleece is then rolled up and stored within the filter.
